Heroes’ Lament is inspired by the archetype of the ‘hero,’ viewed through the lens of the current pandemic world, and that which drives the heroic person through moments of doubt, and the moments of reaffirmation which keep them going. This album explores the notion that heroes need love and support for all they face. With this, and through their goodness, they realize that they need to save themselves too from the crushing defeat of exhaustion.

Heroes’ Lament is made and extrapolated in an alternating sense of dark and light sounds through four overarching movements. “Conquering” and “Heed” reflect on the scale of goodness and clarity of purpose. “Looking Alive” and "Pretense" conjure the sense of battle and defeat. “Omnes” and “Altius,” the latter of which is a collaboration with hyperpop artist thirtyonetwentyfive, renew the hero and see them, against all odds, deliver on their purpose. Finally, “Sacrificial Anode” and “I Know That I Want You Here With Me” see a celebration not only for the hero but by the hero for themselves and what they achieved. The album is composed as a singular piece, like a symphony that is listened to from beginning to end. Gene does not mean for this to necessarily comment on current music trends made for streaming, but an inherent characteristic of the work.

This fully instrumental album is meant to be uplifting, positive, energizing, and enveloping. It hops between ambient, trance, and even acoustic genres, to carry along a certain sense of narrative. Sounds of the sea and electronic decay littered throughout the album convey an otherworldly vastness and depth of ambition.
